Dr Pulkit Kaushal

Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and Subject Lead for Psychiatry

Biography

Dr. Pulkit Kaushal is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Fairfield Centre, Carlton Clinic in Carlisle, Cumbria and hold the position of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and Subject Lead for Psychiatry with The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM). He is registered with the General Medical Council and holds Approved Clinician status.
Dr. Kaushal completed his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in September 2021. He is also a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from Keele University. Dr. Kaushal began his UK medical career through the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Medical Training Initiative (MTI) Scholarship in 2016.
Prior to his consultant appointment, Dr. Kaushal completed higher specialist training across the North East of England. This included roles as a Higher Trainee in Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (FCAMHS) and Complex Neuro-developmental Disorders Services (CNDS) in Newcastle, and in general Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS) in Sunderland and Newcastle. He gained valuable experience in assessing and managing complex cases involving forensic risk, autism spectrum disorders, and severe mental health conditions.
As an International Training Fellow, he worked in Crisis Resolution, Learning Disability, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Yorkshire. His medical training was undertaken in India, where he attained an M.D. in Psychiatry and a Diplomate of the National Board (DNB). He worked as a Senior Resident and Specialty Medical Officer in psychiatry, developing early expertise in child and adolescent mental health, including running specific learning disability and autism clinics.
Dr. Kaushal is actively involved in research and has published on topics including smartphone applications for bipolar disorder, the impact of COVID-19 on adolescent mental health, ADHD, and attachment interventions. He has received several awards, including a Best Poster Presentation at a Leadership and Management Programme and a Health Education England Scholarship for a FAIMER certificate in medical education. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kaushal holds a keen interest in Medical Education. He is a trainer for Core and Higher trainees in Psychiatry and a Royal College of Psychiatry Examiner for Clinical Assessment of Skills and Competencies (CASC), the practical component of the Membership Exam in Psychiatry (MRCPsych).
He held the role of College Tutor for Psychiatry Trainees in Cumbria prior to PCSM role., and is committed to service development, having led audits and contributed to pathway improvements within his trust. Outside of work, Dr. Kaushal has an interest in photography, having completed certified courses, enjoys playing the guitar, and is a keen cook.
