Dr Emma Lewis

Curriculum Development Fellow

Biography

Emma studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen and undertook remote and rural placements across the Scottish Highlands. She intercalated in a Master’s in Public Health, which continues to underpin her interest in public health, health inequalities and healthcare systems. She is a Curriculum Development Fellow at Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM), supporting the design and delivery of the Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum. She has been closely involved in the PHD module and more recently in Year 2 development, particularly within paediatrics. Her educational interests include integrated curriculum design, inclusive learning, and the growing role of digital tools and AI in healthcare and education.

Emma previously worked as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in NHS Lanarkshire, coordinating hospital placements and supporting the graduate entry placement programme for University of Edinburgh students, and as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Simulation supporting students from the Universities of Glasgow and Dundee across multiple year groups. She coordinated and led a professionalism-based simulation course and contributed to acute emergency care, GP simulation and interprofessional learning, as well as faculty development. She has previously been involved in formative and summative OSCE assessments for multiple year groups at the University of Glasgow. She completed Foundation training in the West of Scotland and worked in various Emergency Departments before starting GP training which she continues alongside her role at PCSM. This helps her keep her education work grounded in everyday clinical practice.

She holds a PGDip and MSc in Medical Education (dissertation on simulation and professionalism) and a PGDip in Clinical Leadership and Human Factors, and is an ALS instructor. She enjoys attending medical education conferences and keeping her skills up to date, and has recently presented at various national and international conferences including SESAM, ASPiH, PRATO and UKCEMP. She is particularly interested in professionalism, simulation-based education, interprofessional learning, human factors and wellbeing within medicine – having previously established a regional FY1 mentoring programme. Outside of work, she enjoys skiing, country music, country walks and visits to the theatre.
