Dr Dimitrios Charalampopoulos

Senior Teaching Fellow in Public Health and Research Methods

Biography

Dr Dimitrios Charalampopoulos joins PCSM as a Senior Teaching Fellow, bringing a unique perspective as both a medical doctor and public health epidemiologist. He is passionate about guiding future doctors who see beyond the clinic walls to understand the profound impact of place and community on health. His journey into public health began after qualifying in Medicine at the University of Athens.
His experience in both Greek and NHS healthcare systems fuelled a desire to understand the deeper roots of illness, leading him to an academic path. He earned an MPhil in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from UCL to investigate the complex factors influencing population health. Previously, as a Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Liverpool, he led the Public, Preventative & Global Health (PPGH) Theme for the MBChB program. Believing teaching should be dynamic and interactive, he transformed the student learning experience by integrating new technologies, earning a ‘Teacher of the Year’ nomination for his work.
His commitment extends to the national level, where he serves on the GMC’s Medical Licensing Assessment Item Writing Group as the Public Health representative. His teaching is informed by diverse research experience. He has analysed large-scale health data to understand variations in healthcare for children with type 1 diabetes and asthma.
He has also led international comparison studies of diabetes care across eight high-income countries and evaluated the impact of community COVID-19 testing on hospital admissions. His methodological expertise covers advanced statistical modelling, methods for handling complex data, and evidence synthesis. This background allows him to bring real-world examples into the classroom, illustrating the vital role of epidemiology and research methods in improving health services and patient outcomes.
