Mr David Macafee

David Macafee is Deputy Medical Director for Safety at North Cumbria Integrated Care (Sept 2023-). Medical undergraduate training at University of Nottingham (BMed Sci BMBS Hons) was followed by core and speciality general surgical training (Trent and Northern) then a national laparoscopic training fellowship.

He is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon of Childhood in Middlesbrough (Feb 2012-South Tees) providing a purely NHS practice which includes Emergency General Surgery, Laparoscopic colorectal surgery for patients with inflammatory bowel disease, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Colonoscopy and planned general surgical care of children from birth upwards.

He has been a passionate educator from medical student days initially focussed on suture skills acquisition/simulation, bed side teaching and mentorship culminating in a Masters in Clinical Education from Edgehill University (2007). He has held senior educational roles locally (DPME then Director of Medical Education South Tees 2013 to 2021) and regionally (Surgical Skills Training Coordinator, Newcastle Surgical Training Centre 2011 to 2013). He is a clinical and educational supervisor for foundation, core and speciality trainees.
