Biography

Christopher Chiswell MBChB MPH MFPH is a Consultant in Public Health Medicine who is module lead for Prevention and Healthcare Delivery at the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine.

His career has been focused on bringing a population and prevention mindset to the planning and delivery of acute and community NHS care, leveraging the data and voice provided by local populations to reduce inequalities and improve outcomes. He is part of a small cadre of public health consultants with significant NHS provider organisation experience that he now brings to support PCSM.

Graduating from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2004, he practised clinically in the West Midlands and Greater Manchester, before joining the specialist training programme for public health. His training included time with Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities, Universities and the NHS Commissioning Board, and he progressed from this to establish the first public health consultant role embedded within an NHS Provider Trust in the West Midlands (Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust).

In 2023, Chris moved to the North West to join University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust as their first consultant in public health medicine, attracted by the opportunity to apply his skillset across a unique and complex geographical area. His role takes on the challenge of responding to health inequity as seen through the hospitals and their related services, whilst supporting clinical teams to reach a more sustainable future through population health approaches.

Chris has also previously been a deputy training programme for specialty public health training, with research interests in environmental tobacco smoke exposure. He also has additional interests in prioritisation and elicitation, geospatial public health, and person-centred care.
