Sorena Afshar

Sorena is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon working in North Cumbria. He completed his surgical training in the Northern Deanery and holds a PhD in obesity, weight loss surgery and colorectal cancer risk from Newcastle University. He has a strong academic background and remains active in research. He is passionate about communication skills training and mentoring junior colleagues.

Sorena’s clinical interests include laparoscopic colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, and advanced endoscopy. He is an accredited colonoscopy trainer and has played a central role in strengthening colorectal cancer services locally. As former Colorectal Cancer Lead and Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, he has made significant contributions to service delivery and surgical education.

Sorena is also a committed educator and innovator. He is the founder of a pioneering digital platform using AI to support surgical exam candidates. His platform has been adopted by surgical trainees across the UK and internationally, reflecting his vision of accessible, high-quality education enhanced by technology. Outside his clinical role, he finds balance and fulfilment through quality time with his children, family and friends, alongside a dedication to fitness and physical activity.
