John is a Surgeon who has worked as a consultant in North Cumbria for 20 years. John trained in the North East, Cumbria and Adelaide, South Australia. His main interests are upper GI and hernia surgery and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy. He leads the upper GI multidisciplinary team.
John has been active in delivering education and training using simulation locally, becoming course director and supporting development of local faculty for the Royal College of Surgeons of England START and Basic Surgical Skills courses and supporting local delivery of the non-technical skills (NOTSS) course for which he is a faulty member and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh tutor.
John’s leadership roles have given him insight into the local health needs. As Clinical Director for Surgery and subsequently Senior Reporting Officer in the government’s “”Success Regime”” he was closely involved in local consultations on healthcare delivery in Cumbria. As Associate Medical Director he was part of the team responsible for delivering the outcomes of this work establishing closer integration between all areas of the Cumbria healthcare system, achieving financial balance and realising the first Integrated Care Foundation Trust nationally.
In his current educational leadership role within the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS FT, as Associate Director of Medical Education, he is responsible for educational quality and professionalism within the surgical specialties.
Outside work, John’s current objective is to persuade his family to complete the Wainwrights with him.
