Dr Vimal Umakanthan

I am a consultant in Emergency medicine based at Furness General hospital at Barrow in Furness.

Having qualified as a doctor from India I have worked in the UK as a NHS doctor for over 20 years. I gained my CCT in emergency medicine in 2018 and have been a substantive EM consultant since.

I have a special interest in medical eduction and have been directing and instructing on ALS, ATLS and EPALS/APLS courses for a while. Recently I was the Trust specialty training lead at UHMBT and supported post graduation education via simulation training and clinical skills workshops.

I am a lead examiner for the Royal college of emergency medicine and examine at Lancaster medical school.

I have had formal leadership training at NHS leadership academy and have held several leadership roles during my career such as VTE lead, educational lead, resuscitation committee lead etc.

Outside of work I enjoy the outdoors and do charity related activities such as K2B. I also keep life in the fast lane by riding motorcycles and mountain bikes in my spare time.
